New organ in Riga Cathedral
It is widely known that the organ built by E. F. Walcker & Co. in 1883/1884 is an outstanding instrument of the late Romantic period. For many years, organizers of musical and cultural life have wished to enrich Riga’s organ landscape with a significant instrument from the Baroque era (a Bach organ). Now the realization of this idea has begun.
When the Cathedral returned to the ownership of the Church (LELB) in 2007, the Dresden organ builder Kristian Wegscheider, with his special expertise in Baroque organ building, had developed a project for the side aisle of the Cathedral in the style of the organ builder Heinrich Andreas Contius (1708–1795), who was highly esteemed by J. S. Bach and is regarded as the most important 18th-century organ builder in the Baltic region. At that time, the project could not be implemented due to financial reasons.
The foundation of the German–Latvian joint project is also the design created in 2007 with the participation of Latvian artists, and Latvian organ builders will also be involved in the construction of the instrument. The Cathedral’s administration and congregation are involved in fundraising. The organ is planned to be installed within three years. With a generous donation from Karl Bechstein and the funds already raised by the organ support foundation, the financing of the organ is largely secured; however, approximately EUR 400,000 is still needed.
