Jazz baroque ensemble:
Jānis Strazdiņš (voice)
Lāsma Meldere-Šestakova (baroque violin)
Jānis Rubiks (double bass)
Aigars Reinis (organ, positive)
Programme: J. S. Bach, M. Durufle, J. Karlsons (premiere), Anna Veismane (premiere), M. Pētersone un F. H. Erlebach in jazz baroque tunes
The Music Director and Organist of Riga Cathedral, Aigars Reinis, invites you to his 50th birthday concert, where he will perform together with his like-minded musical companions.
The concert will feature classical organ repertoire alongside two premieres – "Sun in the Window" for saxophone and organ by Anna Veismane, and "At Sunrise", an organ fantasy by Juris Karlsons. Anna Veismane’s creative work spans a wide range of chamber music, and her compositions are imbued with feminine poetics, subtlety, and flowing expressiveness. In her new piece, metaphors of light and the sun are brought to the forefront. Meanwhile, Juris Karlsons, a master of brilliant orchestration and symphonic scale, has composed his organ fantasy "At Sunrise" as a musical meditation on the threshold between night and day.
Also featured in the concert is composer Madara Pētersone’s 2022 work "Testimony of Time", written for Aigars Raumanis and Aigars Reinis. The composer drew inspiration from lines of poetry by Inga Pizāne: “I wish only spring and peace would begin,” with the piece becoming a symbolic postcard with a drawn heart – a message from Latvia to the world, bearing witness to empathy, humanity, and a longing for peace.
The program will also include the rarely performed Suite for Organ by Maurice Duruflé – one of the most important works in French organ literature. It blends Gregorian melodicism with an impressionist color palette, delicate lyricism with dazzling virtuosity. The ensemble “JazzBaroque” will perform works by Baroque composer Philipp Heinrich Erlebach in a blend of improvisation and jazz styles.

BAHS. MOCARTS. DE MEIJS. Ciklā VASARAS KLASIKA. Orķestris “Rīga” un Guntis Kuzma
Orchestra RIGA
Conductor Guntis Kuzma
Bassoon Raimonds Gulbis
Organ Kristīne Adamaite
This summer, Orchestra “Riga” once again invites classical music lovers to the heart of Riga Old Town for the Summer Classics concert series taking place at the historic Riga Cathedral – one of the most majestic and acoustically rich sacred venues in Latvia. Led by conductor Guntis Kuzma, the concert offers a colorful musical journey spanning three centuries — from the Baroque to the present day.
J. S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B-flat major (BWV 596), here in a wind orchestra arrangement by R. L. Moehlmann. This piece is, in fact, Bach’s organ transcription of Vivaldi’s Concerto in D minor (RV 565), an inspiring example of Baroque-era musical exchange and admiration. Organist Kristīne Adamaite will also perform Prelude and Fugue in C minor (BWV 546), known for its grand, noble prelude and complex fugue. W. A. Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major (KV 191), written at the young age of 18, showcases the instrument’s lyrical and agile nature, interpreted by soloist Raimonds Gulbis. Two of Mozart’s rarely heard organ works — the lively Leipzig Gigue and the delicate Andante in F major, originally composed for mechanical organ — reveal the composer’s refined expression in miniature form. Concluding the evening are Johan de Meij’s symphonic works The Red Tower and Echoes of San Marco — contemporary soundscapes inspired by history and architecture.

BAHS. DUBRA. DEBISĪ. Ciklā VASARAS KLASIKA. Orķestris “Rīga” un Valdis Butāns
In the summer of 2025, the grand halls of Riga Cathedral will once again resonate with the sounds of the Orchestra "Riga" as it presents its concert series Summer Classics/ Vasaras Klasika. On August 5th at 19:00, classical music enthusiasts will be treated with the concert BACH. DUBRA. DEBUSSY.
The program highlights three masters of classical and contemporary symphonic music. J. S. Bach and C. Debussy represent two pillars of the Baroque and Impressionist traditions, while Rihards Dubra a renowned Latvian composer, brings contemplative depth and modern resonance to the evening’s repertoire. The program includes J. S. Bach’s E-flat major Prelude and Fugue, BWV 552, in an arrangement by D. Hunsberger that brings out the full richness of the wind orchestra, and the Concerto in D minor — a transcription of one of Vivaldi’s violin concertos (BWV 596), showcasing Bach’s admiration for Italian brilliance, known for its rich and colorful timbre. Organist Aigars Reinis will also interpret Claude Debussy’s The Sunken Cathedral (La Cathédrale engloutie) — a haunting vision rendered in an evocative orchestration by Jean-Louis Roques. This is paired with Debussy’s ethereal Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, arranged for winds by M. Bašs, opening up new textures while retaining the introspective atmosphere of the original. The two works by Latvian composer Rihards Dubra — Toccata (for organ) and Awaiting the Dawn (for organ and wind orchestra) — create a contemplative finale: music that bridges liturgical tradition with modern expressivity.
